12 myths about Coronavirus you should stop believing right now

With more than 1 million deaths and almost 2 million cases all across the world, Coronavirus (COVID-19) has emerged as one of the most agonized catastrophes human beings ever faced. As COVID-19 continues to spread its terror in each part of the world, assumptions and speculations around it are equally dreading our minds. Here, I have compiled major myths about Coronavirus that you need to stop believing. Right now.

Myth 1: Antibiotics can treat Coronavirus

Antibiotics are only effective against bacteria, not viruses.

Myth 2: Masks can stop Coronavirus infection

Surgical masks cannot prevent airborne viruses though they stop direct droplets, N95 masks do. Respirators or N95 masks can stop 95% of airborne particles. But N95 masks are not needed outside healthcare areas, but are mandatory for health workers, patients, and their carers as they stop virus-carrying droplets, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC. Wearing mask is effective only when other precautions (like frequent handwashing) are practiced.

Myth 3: Eggs and non-veg consumption creates Coronavirus risk

It is advised to avoid raw and undercooked animal products but there’s no evidence to support the risk of Coronavirus infection by eating eggs and meat. But it’s always safe to stay away from consuming non-veg for many reasons.

Myth 4: Garlic prevents Coronavirus infection

According to WHO, there’s no proof of this.

Myth 5: Alcohol or Chlorine kills the Coronavirus

Disinfectants and sanitizers keep the surfaces and your hands clean but they don’t kill Coronavirus if it has already attacked the body.

Myth 6: Drinking water flushes out the virus from your mouth

Staying hydrated is absolutely a healthy habit but there’s no professional evidence saying water flushes out viruses.

Myth 7: Warm weather kills the Coronavirus

According to the World Health Organization, the Coronavirus is likely to affect any area, no matter if the weather is hot or cold.

Myth 8: Taking hot bath keeps you safe from Coronavirus

There’s not any authentic statement that supports this belief.

Myth 9: Getting packages from China isn’t safe

WHO says it is safe to receive packages from China as Coronavirus doesn’t survive on objects for long.

Myth 10: Coronavirus attacks only older people

This virus affects all age groups. People having underlying health conditions are more vulnerable to getting ill.

Myth 11: Being able to hold the breath for a minute indicates you have no Coronavirus infection

There’s no authentic evidence to prove the same. Proper medical tests are to be performed to detect any lung infection.

Myth 12: Pets can spread Coronavirus infection

There’s no scientific experiment to support this statement.
